NZ DAY 25
DUNNS RIDGE TRACK : The Dome Trig to Wenderholm Park 4KM ( Total KM's walked 481)
As discussed yesterday we hiked into the Dome cafe this morning had breakfast and asked about a lift to Puhoi. The owner of the cafe could offer no suggestions except to hitch which we weren’t really keen to do as it was basically on state highway 1, but it seemed the only option. We ordered bacon and eggs and they came out perfectly poached and with really nice rye toast with lots of butter just delicious. As we were finishing breaking the owner came and spoke to us reiterated that if he could he would take us, the guy behind but’s in and says I’m going to Auckland I can drop you in Puhoi. thank you Universe. So what started out looking like a dismal day turn into a hour drive into Puhoi, then a glorious day lying by the river waiting for Tim, Hannah & Georgia to walk what we had skipped. It also gave me time to grab some birthday treaties to celebrate my birthday.
The crew arrive around five and we got on the river to paddle 2 hours up to Wenderholm, it was really gorgeous and quiet relaxing. David video the whole trip on the go pro on his head.....unfortunately we didn’t check the position of the go pro and alas all that was videotaped was blue sky.
HIGHLIGHT: The paddle down the river
LOWLIGHT: Not being physically capable of walking today.
Today I am grateful David and I are on the same page about our journey. We started this not knowing how our bodies would hold out. After punishing them for 24 days we are starting to see the signs of fatigue. We aren’t recovering as quickly and getting tired earlier. So some decision had to be made, we are going to look at maybe busing some road sections and also look at doing some of the more scenic trips rather than religiously sticking to the Te Araroa. We still intend to make it to The Bluff and cover the kilometres but we want this to be fun not a slog.
