NZ DAY 3
90 MILE BEACH TRACK: The Bluff Campsite to Utea Lodge 31KM (Total KM walked 73)
We are the champions, 31km over sand and in the wind.
The tide dictate our plan of attack, a choice of waking in soft sand(a hard energy zapping trudge) or hard sand (an easy stroll) We choose to leave early 6am, walk for 4 hours, then bunker down in the sand dunes and wait out the high tide. An amazing day, weather is perfect for beach walking - overcast and cool, if the sun was out you would burn to a crisp. Scenery was the same as yesterday. Tonight we are staying at Utea Lodge a fancy name for an amazing camp with kitchen facilities and hot showers, ah the simple things in life definitely the best. After 3 days on sand it is amazing how good a hot shower can feel. Met the “silverhikers” tonight a couple I have been following on Instagram. The only other people we have met that are of the same vintage as us. Utea Lodge is run by a gorgeous lady called Tania who generously gave us a delicious avocado and we were gifted 2 boiled eggs from 2 girls in a campervan so avocado and egg for lunch tomorrow.
HIGHLIGHT: Utea Lodge and Tania the host
LOWLIGHT: Being really stiff and sand in every orifice
Today I am grateful for midday naps that allow me to continue walking for 31 km. I am grateful for great weather that makes this part of the journey easier.I am also grateful for the people we are walking with, it makes even the endless hours of walking fun.
