NZ Day 4
90 MILE BEACH TRACK : Utea Lodge to Waipapakauri 17KM ( Total KM's walked 90)
The beach has started to take its toll. Only 17km to walked today but we miscalculated the tide and did a few hours hard labour on soft sand. Both David and I are nursing blisters and very tender feet. Have exfoliated face and legs regularly with a healthy mixture of sunscreen and sand, so I am polished to perfection For the first time in my life I have a bottom lip, due to it being swollen from sun and wind.
We have pulled together a little caravan of people to walk with which is working out really well. The cast is made up of Georgia a New Zealand girl, Hannah from the UK, Tim from USA and us a motley crew but we are having lots of laughs. They are all experienced hikers so last night entertainment was David and I showing them everything in our packs and they decided whether it stay or was to be posted on pretty boring you may think. The entertainment came from a David & I begging to keep them and trying to justify keeping them. In all it added up to 4kg we will no longer cart with us. Thanks guys for your input. Today we are again waited out the tide at lunch with a sleep in the dunes. As we came of the beach late in the afternoon David stopped to have a chat with a guy who said there was a storm brewing so we all opted to get a cabin for the night. Since we had BBQ facilities it was decided that we would all put in money for a “feast”. The boys hitched a ride into town and for $10 each we got lamp chops, lettuce , capsicum, tomato, avocado and dessert of mini snickers, yum.
HIGHLIGHT: Walking with a great group Tim Barton, Hannah Eaton, Georgia Whiting and of course my Spunky Rooster David Bezear.
LOWLIGHT:Miscalculation of tide.
Grateful for a warm place to sleep. Grateful for the owner of the park giving the guys a hitch into town. Grateful for a nice dinner.
BTW it poured down all night the cabin was a good call.
