NZ DAY 1
90 MILE BEACH TRACK : Cape Reinga to Twilight Beach Campsite 12KM ( Total KM's Walked 12)
Today is the day, over 12months of planning, saving, training and endless conversations and it comes down to this.........throw the pack on and walk.
We are at Cape Reinga the northern most point of New Zealand and the starting point of the Te Araroa. For Māori, Cape Reinga is the most spiritually significant place in New Zealand.
It is here that after death, all Māori spirits travel up the coast and over the wind-swept vista to the pohutukawa tree on the headland of Te Rerenga Wairua. They descend into the underworld (reinga) by sliding down a root into the sea below. The spirits then travel underwater to the Three Kings Islands where they climb out onto Ohaua, the highest point of the islands and bid their last farewell before returning to the land of their ancestors, Hawaiiki-A-Nui
We got to Cape Reinga about 1.30pm and did the obligatory photos at the sign post. Feeling very emotional ( from super excited to awe to scared shitless) hard to believe that this epic journey is about to start. Wondering what changes will occur both physical and mentally. How will David and I fare with being together 24/7. We are both so grateful to the universe for this opportunity to discover what else there is to living. We are under no illusion that this is going to be easy, we will embrace the unknown and see what unfolds. Today we started the journey with 8 other hikers all here for the own challenges all here planning to reach the end in 3-5 months time.
The walk from Cape Reinga to Twilight was up and down and due to good timing with the tides quiet easy, made it into camp with plenty of time to enjoy the picturesque surrounds.
HIGHTLIGHT: Seeing Cape Reinga for real after seeing hundreds of other peoples start pictures.
LOWLIGHT: The sandflies in camp.
I am so grateful to have the opportunity to be able to have this time to do such an epic walk. I am grateful for David, his love and support. I am grateful for Quickmovie and the ability to quickly sum up our day in video.
