JAPAN DAY 24
No temples 15km
Total kms walked in Japan 520
Accumulative total kms walked 2230
Tonight we are actually sleeping in a shrine, Kotsuka Daishido, (see picture) with just enough room for the three of us to sleep, a drop toilet and a tap. It was in the middle of paddy fields. There was no one around to ask permission so we just left a name slip. All night we talked about being struck by lightening for sleeping in a sacred place. However, I did readI that shrines and temples were regularly used to shelter travellers and used for meeting places. The shrine was set in a small wooded area so was quiet nice to be isolated a bit.
HIGHLIGHT: How easy the walk was today. After some hard days on the road it’s nice to take time to slow down and just have an easy walk.
LOWLIGHT: The toilet at the accomodation...it’s bit basic.
Gratitude tonight is for the people of Shimanto City who maintain the Daishido. Grateful to Lawson for providing some great food especially the desserts. Grateful to Kobo Daishi who hundreds of years ago set of on this pilgrimage.
