JAPAN DAY 23
Between 37-38 28km
Total kms walked in Japan 505
Accumulative total kms walked 2215
What a total waste of a day, it was one of those days I spent in my head. After yesterday’s mammoth effort my body was in no shape to complete another big day. The balls of my feet feel like lead and my shoulders ache but the trail dictates another big day. We are currently between temples in an area lacking in infrastructure so the distances walked each day relies heavily on where we can get a place to sleep. So even though not optimal for the body, we had to do a 28km day landing us gratefully at a Henro House tonight . This Henro House was straight out of a 1970’s Japanese good housekeeper magazine. I think it maybe, it is the host’s Grandma’s house because it is typically “granny” style, very quaint.
Today was all about just doing what needs to be done to get to where we need to be. To take my mind of my body’s discomfort and pain the mind games began early. I have talked several times about the conversation The Spunky Rooster and I have to amuse each other whilst walking. They span a wild and wonderful scope of topics, however they don’t hold a candle to the games I play with myself . It goes something like this
First I spend a couple of hours trying to write todays journal, when I can no longer distract myself doing that I start focusing on big life questions.......What is it I want in life? What am I trying to achieve? What have I to prove? Then when I have exhausted that conversations, I chant my mantra “I am fit, strong and capable”. When that can no longer hold my concentration I play music and sing and last but not least I have the angry conversation with myself about not being able to distract myself. Now these conversations are just to keep me from going crazy, when pain sets in and the going get tough.
We visited temple 37 first up this morning and I asked David what we were praying for today and he said your choice and the first thing that popped into my head was acceptance, acceptance of self, circumstance , partner, family, life, friends you name it was on the prayer list today.
HIGHLIGHT: The accomodation, it is so cute
LOWLIGHT: NIL it was a great day.
Grateful for Lawson and 7/11 as they have kept us well fed and watered the whole trip. I’m grateful for cool days it makes walking so much more pleasant. I am grateful for our conviction to walk, sometimes just to get up and put your shoes on and walk is the hardest thing in the world to do.here to edit.
