NZ DAY 24
GOVAN WILSON TRACK: Pakiri to Dome Summit 26KM (Total KM's walked 477)
Today we started around 7am, an hour later than planned due to a down pour of rain around 5 am. The steep uphill through farming land gave great views of where we had come from. Then it was back into the forrest. Again it was muddy and slippery and the steep inclines and declines soon took a toll on my knees and ankle. You had to be alert all the time as there were tree roots and rocks hidden n the mud. David and I fell behind from the rest of the team. Around 5pm David and I had to make some decision about our ability to make the Dome cafe, the agreed camp tonight. David made the decision we couldn’t so we started to look for a camp site. Now the Taj is great for space and for weight, however when trying to find a piece of grass big enough to hold the Taj in a dense forrest it becomes a liability. We finally found a grassy knoll that the Taj fitted and so we spent the night on top of a mountain alone and 4kms from where we wanted to be. Which brings us to our next decision about tommorow. ........Not reaching the Dome cafe today means we have 4km to walk before starting the 26k to get us to Puhui to met up with the rest of the team for our paddling trip. The way I’m feeling I know it can’t be done so we have decided to hitch to Puhoi.
HIGHLIGHT: Camping alone on the summit
LOWLIGHT: Not reaching our destination
Grateful for find a place to put up the Taj and rest our weary bodies. Grateful for amazing sunsets. Very grateful no one fell over the Taj as we had to camp half on the track.
