NZ DAY 38
HIHIKIWI TRACK: Pahautea Hut to Michaels place 20km (Total KM's walked 677)
Today was a turning point in our journey and what we are trying to achieve.
Having spent the night in the hut we were well rested. Today’s walked read like a nice meander through the forest and then some road walking to connect us to the next forest. So we were up and at it full of energy and enthusiasm. Well the meander in the forest took us 5 hours to cover 5.5km with sections require chain grip to ascend. It was muddy and shitful. At around 10.30 we stopped for morning tea and David asked me to name my most memorable moments and what was the highlights. Well guess what the memorable moments had little to do with the track, the trial has been a hard slog with not much scenic reward. So it as decided today we were going to skip some parts of the Te Araroa and instead do other walks that highlight New Zealand’s amazing beauty. We will still stick to the trail heading South and eventually get to the bluff but trying to take care n some of New Zealand’s amazing scenery.
As we came out of the second forrest it pelted down so it was head down bum up to get to tonights camp spot. A trail angel’s front yard. Soon after we arrived in camp Steph and Herman came in to spend the night. Tomorrow we are looking to hitch to Waitomo to see the glow worm caves.
HIGHLIGHT: The view from our hut this morning and making it out of the forrest before the rain
LOWLIGHT: Catching up with Steph and Herman again
Grateful for David’s love and understanding, he really is looking after me. Grateful for trail angels their generosity makes this trail.
